About the programme
An upgrade on the current OP4260 Certificate in Out of School Care and Recreation (20 credits)
Still the only distance learning programme in New Zealand specifically written for OSCAR workers

Approved by NZQA and on the NZ Register of Quality Assured Programmes
Comprising two 20 credit courses, with up to a year to complete each course
Aims - This programme aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to provide quality care and learning experiences for children aged 5 to 13 in out of school programmes at assistant level.
Cost
$172 per course. A student administration fee of $50 (non-refundable) will also apply if this is your first enrolment with The Open Polytechnic this year.
OSCAR Network in Christchurch has sponsorship funds for staff working in non-profit programmes within the Christchurch City Council ward boundaries. Check your eligibility by calling 3793 915 - also find out about the support sessions OSCAR Network will be offering.

4290 Introduction to Out of School Care and Recreation (OSCAR) - Level 4—20 credits
Requirements
Complete all five modules & Complete at least 60 hours work in an OSCAR programme over study period
Structure
Module 1 Setting the scene
Module 2 Working professionally
Module 3 Working with children
Module 4 Building positive relationships
Module 5 Working in a safe environment
Assessment
Three written assignments
Achievement-based assessment, with results recorded as Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction
Exit qualification
The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Introduction to OSCAR Certificate of Achievement (20 credits)
4291 Extension to Out of School Care and Recreation - Level 4—20 credits
Pre-requisites
You must pass 4290 before enrolling in 4291.
Requirements
Complete all four modules (note that Module 3 can be completed by all students, even if they have no children with special needs enrolled in their programme)
Complete at least 60 hours work in an OSCAR programme over study period
Structure
Module 1 Developing a bicultural approach
Module 2 Responding to challenging behaviour
Module 3 Working with children with special needs
Module 4 Developing a programme of activities
Assessment
Four written assignments
Achievement-based assessment, with results recorded as Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction
Exit qualification
The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Out of School Care and Recreation (OSCAR) Certificate (40 credits)
Cross crediting
Graduates of the current OP4260 Certificate in Out of School Care and Recreation will be able to cross credit into the new certificate. Letters will be sent to all graduates soon explaining the cross crediting arrangements.
